Spartan Motors Names Richard Schalter Executive Vice President

CHARLOTTE, Mich., Aug. 7 /PRNewswire/ — Spartan Motors, Inc. (NASDAQ:SPAR)
today announced that Richard Schalter has been elevated to executive vice president and will take on increased responsibilities at the Company, including oversight of Carpenter, in addition to his role as chief financial officer.

The Charlotte, Mich.-based manufacturer of custom chassis, emergency vehicles and buses said that Schalter replaces Tony Sommer, who also served as chairman of its school bus operations, Carpenter Industries, Inc. Sommer resigned as an officer and director of Carpenter.

“Rich has made extraordinary contributions to Spartan Motors since joining our team in 1996, and I am confident he will be able to help us make significant operational improvements across the board,” said John Sztykiel, president and chief operating officer. “Rich has also been appointed to lead a team that will bring a fresh perspective and look at new alternatives for Carpenter.”

Schalter, 46, has held the positions of CFO and secretary/treasurer of Spartan since joining the Company four years ago. He was named to the board of directors in September 1999. During his tenure at Spartan, Schalter has worked to improve cash flow, pay down corporate debt and work to institute financial measurement and accountability across all business units.

Prior to joining Spartan, Schalter served as treasurer and director of finance and administration for Great Lakes Hybrids, an international seed distributor and division of KWS a.g., based in Germany. He has also served as treasurer and financial administrator for Martin Systems, Inc., a global supplier of electrical controls and machine operating systems.
